Although many watches are water-resistant, we recommend keeping your watch away from water whenever possible and always screwing the crown down fully. Water resistance is measured in atmospheres (ATM); 1 ATM ≈ 10 m of static pressure. 5 ATM (50 m) covers hand-washing, rain and splashes, not swimming. Never operate crowns, pushers or bezels while the watch is wet, and avoid hot showers and saunas — steam bypasses gaskets. Salt and chlorine also harm any watch. Water damage from use beyond the rating is not covered by warranty.
Wind it. The power reserve is likely near zero after transit. Unscrew the crown (anti-clockwise) if it is a screw-down type, wind 15–20 turns clockwise, then push and screw the crown back in. Quartz watches need no winding.
An automatic watch stores energy from wrist motion. Left unworn it runs down and stops; wind 10–12 turns to restart. If a quartz watch stops, the battery needs replacing. Adjust date/day with the crown in its first position, time in the second.
Unscrew the crown, pull it gently to the click, set the time by turning forward, then push the crown back and screw it down. Always check the crown is fully closed to keep dust and moisture out.
Crown position one sets the 24-hour GMT hand (and date); position two sets local time. Set local time first, then the GMT hand. The two are synchronised so both time zones can be read at a glance.
A new battery normally lasts about two years.
Screw-down crown: turn anti-clockwise until it releases, pull to the first click for the date (and day), the second for the time. Set the date forward only. Push the crown back and screw it down.
A crown that locks onto a threaded tube to seal the case (used on most Rolex models). Unscrew before winding or setting; screw back gently until snug. Never force it.
A corrector set into the case, usually for date, month or year on calendar watches. Press fully with the tool provided (or a ballpoint) and release fully; half-presses can misalign the mechanism.
Unscrew the protective pushers. Top pusher starts and stops; bottom pusher resets. Always press fully, then screw the pushers back down to protect against water and impacts.
Never change the date between 22:00 and 03:00 on calendar movements — move the time to 06:00 first. Never press reset while the chronograph is running. Start/stop with the top pusher, reset with the bottom.
A scale on the bezel or dial that converts elapsed seconds into speed. Start the chronograph at one mile/km marker, stop at the next: the seconds hand points to the average speed in units per hour.
