Review of Richard Mille RM061 Yohan Blake

Summary

The Richard Mille RM 61-01 “Yohan Blake” is a lightweight, skeletonized sports watch released in 2014 as a follow-up to the RM 59-01 tourbillon, produced in a limited run of 150 pieces. It features a Carbon TPT® case, a fully skeletonized manual-wind RMUL2 movement with a 55-hour power reserve, and exceptional shock resistance up to 5,000 g’s. The vibrant “Baby Blake” color scheme—green inner bezel, yellow flange, and black case—echoes Yohan Blake’s Jamaican heritage, while the ergonomic tonneau design and integrated rubber strap ensure comfort despite its bold dimensions. As the last of its line, the RM 61-01 combines cutting-edge materials, high-performance mechanics, and racer-inspired styling into a highly sought-after collector’s piece.

Background & Lineage

Richard Mille first collaborated with Olympic sprinter Yohan Blake in 2013, debuting the exuberant RM 59-01 tourbillon in green and yellow for 50 pieces at over €500,000 each.
In 2014, the simpler, more wearable “Baby Blake” RM 61-01 was launched, retaining the “beast bridge” motif and color accents but in a stealthy black case and graded-down price point.
Over its six-year production, the RM 61-01 remained largely unchanged, making the 2016 “All Grey” TZP ceramic variant the final iteration in the 150-piece limited edition.

Case & Materials

Carbon TPT® Case: The 48.00 × 39.70 × 12.25 mm tonneau case is milled from Carbon TPT®, a composite of hundreds of ultra-thin carbon layers, yielding extreme strength, scratch resistance, and a distinctive striped finish.
Ceramic Variant: A limited run used TZP ceramic for even greater hardness (exceeding sapphire’s scratch resistance) while maintaining lightness.
Water Resistance: Rated to 50 m, suitable for daily wear but not deep diving.

Dial & Aesthetics

Skeletonized Display: No traditional dial plate—hour markers float above the RMUL2 movement, offering an unobstructed view of gear trains and bridges finished with micro-blasted and polished surfaces for depth and legibility.
Signature Colors: The inner bezel is bright green anodized aluminum, the upper flange is yellow, and the rubber strap inserts carry matching hues, reflecting Blake’s Jamaican flag and “beast” persona.

Movement & Performance

Caliber RMUL2: A manual-wind, skeletonized movement weighing just 4.3 g, constructed from Grade 5 titanium plates and bridges PVD-coated for dark stealth appeal.
Power Reserve: Dual barrel system yields approx. 55 hours, a remarkable feat in a weight-optimized caliber.
Shock Resistance: Tested to withstand impacts over 5,000 g’s, making it ideal for high-intensity sports.

Strap & Wearability

Integrated Rubber Strap: Features aerated black rubber with colored inserts and secures via a Carbon TPT® folding clasp; the entire watch weighs under 40 g on the wrist.
Ergonomics: Despite its bold dimensions, the sculpted tonneau case and supple strap deliver exceptional comfort over prolonged wear.

Exclusivity & Value

Limited Edition: Only 150 examples worldwide, each individually numbered on the caseback.
Collector Appeal: Secondary-market prices often exceed original retail, driven by its advanced materials, athletic heritage, and finality as the last RM 61-01 model.
