Sonic Factory Daytona 116578SACO "Orange Sapphire" 1:1 Best Edition White Dial on Yellow Gold Case and Bracelet SA4130

Rolex Daytona 116578SACO – Comprehensive Review

Historical Background and Release

Rolex quietly introduced the ref. 116578SACO in 2019 as an off‑catalog special edition of the Daytona. It debuted alongside its sister model (ref. 116588SACO on Oysterflex) in a “hush-hush” Basel release. The new SACO draws on Rolex’s legacy of gem-set Daytonas: its 36 orange sapphires recall the “Leopard” Daytona (ref. 116598SACO) from 2004. In fact, “SACO” stands for Saphirs Cognac, French for cognac-colored sapphires. Phillips notes that Rolex offered the 116578SACO only to select top clients as an “off‑catalog” 18k yellow-gold Daytona.

Technical Specifications

  • Case & Bracelet: 40.0 mm Oyster case and matching 18k yellow-gold bracelet. Solid screw-down back and crown, polished finishing. Water-resistant to 100 m.

  • Bezel: Round 18k yellow-gold bezel paved with 36 baguette-cut orange sapphires (graded from fiery orange to reddish tones). (The tachymeter scale is omitted under the gem setting.)

  • Dial: Lustrous white mother-of-pearl. Eight round brilliant-cut diamond hour markers set in yellow-gold surrounds. Three subdials (gold-rimmed) for 30-minute, 12-hour chrono, and small seconds. Gold hands and Rolex logo.

  • Movement: Rolex Calibre 4130, self-winding chronograph. 28,800 vph (4 Hz), ~72-hour power reserve. 44 jewels, column-wheel actuated. Chronometer-certified.

  • Other: Sapphire crystal, Twinlock crown, Daytona chronograph functions (central sweep sec., minute and hour totalizers). No date or GMT.

Design and Aesthetics

The 116578SACO is unabashedly opulent. Its most eye-catching feature is the bezel of 36 orange baguette sapphires (a true “statement piece” as one retailer puts it), which transitions through red-orange hues for a sunset effect. Against this fiery ring, the white mother-of-pearl dial provides contrast. The dial’s eight diamond indices (in gold settings) and gold-lined subdials catch light without adding color. The polished yellow-gold case and Oyster bracelet complete the lavish look. Collectors describe the 116578SACO as “not for the faint-hearted” – SJX notes it is “impressive as a jeweled object” and “ostentatious, but impeccably made”.

Viewed alongside its kin, the SACO’s design stands out. Unlike the multicolored Rainbow Daytona (ref. 116595RBOW) with its full rainbow bezel, the SACO’s single-color orange theme is unique. (The Rainbow Daytona features 36 sapphires in a spectrum and even a pavé-diamond dial; the SACO’s dial is comparatively restrained.) Compared to the 2004 “Leopard” Daytona, which had a wild animal-print dial, the SACO swaps the print for classic mother-of-pearl. In sum, the 116578SACO is essentially a jewelry-laden Daytona – a chronograph in function but a gem-set “wearable art” in appearance.

Market Value and Rarity

As a rare, off-menu model, the 116578SACO commands a high premium. Original Rolex pricing was about €79,000 (ex. taxes). Today it trades far above retail: tracker WatchAnalytics lists its current value around €252,000 (about a 158% increase). For example, a Phillips Hong Kong auction in Nov 2021 realized HK$2,646,000 (roughly US$340,000) for one. Dealers now list pre-owned 116578SACOs well over $300–400k; one London boutique offered a 2020 example at £325,000 (≈$435k). Superwatchman notes it’s “extremely rare… almost never available” and warns buyers won’t “get one for under $300,000”.

This rarity is by design. Rolex produced the 116578SACO in very limited numbers and only for top clients. Phillips comments that surviving examples are “rare in the wild” with “low output” and “highly demanded” by collectors. In short, collector desirability is extremely high due to its uniqueness and scarcity.

Collector and Enthusiast Impressions

Among collectors, the 116578SACO is seen as a niche showpiece. Opinions vary: some praise it as a fun, ”daily beater” for the ultra-rich, while others view it as too flashy. SJX wryly suggests that if you have the money and “don’t take yourself too seriously,” it’s a great watch to enjoy. The WatchAnalytics gem-set guide notes the SACO draws heavily on Rolex’s flamboyant “Beach” Daytona heritage (Zenith-era gem Daytonas). Similarly, Phillips observes that Daytona gem‑sets “what was neglected in the past is now cherished”.

In comparison with its siblings, the SACO occupies a wild-but-wearable middle ground. The full Rainbow Daytonas (e.g. 116595RBOW Everose) are often called the most desirable modern Rolexes, featuring colorful sapphire bezels and often pavé dials. The SACO matches their exuberance (sharing a 36-stone bezel) but opts for a monochromatic orange theme and simpler dial. The 2004 Leopard Daytona (116598SACO) was even more outrageous – 36 “cognac” sapphires on the bezel, a leopard-print dial, and diamond-set lugs – a model famously worn by Nicolas Cage. The SACO revives the orange-sapphire bezel of the Leopard but in a more conventional gold-and-MOP package.

Pop Culture and Celebrity Ownership

The 116578SACO is so rare it has few documented public appearances. However, it has surfaced among celebrity watch enthusiasts. Notably, rapper 21 Savage has been photographed wearing the 116578SACO in yellow gold. (His example’s specs are described on Superwatchman, which calls the model “extremely rare” and notes its $300k+ value.) DJ Khaled – another hip-hop tastemaker – is known for wearing gem-set Daytonas (including Rainbow Daytonas) and has showcased an orange-sapphire Daytona on social media, further highlighting the SACO’s pop-cultural appeal. In an earlier era, the original “Leopard” Daytona (116598SACO) achieved fame through actor Nicolas Cage, who famously owned one.

Beyond these examples, the 116578SACO has yet to make major movie or TV appearances, but it is frequently featured on watch-enthusiast blogs and social media. Its rarity and striking looks ensure that any celebrity sighting (often noted by IG/TikTok watch spotters) generates buzz. Collectors and VIP clients regard the 116578SACO as a “secret menu” Daytona – a flashy, ultra-exclusive piece coveted by those “in the know”.
